Pilates Plain and Simple | What Is Pilates and Is it Right for You?

Updated: Mar 23

Sex and the City Fans will remember Season 4, Episode 16, where Richard's assistant accidentally walks in on Samantha, who just got out of the shower. He said, "If it's any consolation—WOW!" and she coyly smiled and said, "Pilates." That was in 2002, and Pilates is still making a statement.

For some people, that statement is somewhat intimidating. I want to break down those walls or worry for those of you new to the practice. As a certified Pilates instructor, there's so much I can share about the benefits of mind, body, and soul just by giving a few minutes of each day to the craft.

I'm not talking about Reformer Pilates with the sliding carriage apparatus. This is about Pilates you can do from the privacy of your own home, with me!

What Is Pilates?

Developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is an exercise system that focuses on the spine and core muscle group, aiming to build strength and flexibility through low-impact movements.

Stressing alignment, posture, and breathing, Pilates uses moves that may initially seem small or simple but are challenging when done correctly and repeatedly. It aims to be accessible to all people, regardless of age or fitness level.

Regular practice works both to improve your fitness level and to help rehabilitate injuries on the spine and core muscle group, aiming to build strength and flexibility through low-impact movements.

The Origins of Pilates

Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer, in the early 20th century. Originally called "Contrology," the method focused on strength, flexibility, and mind-body connection.

While interned in England during World War I, Pilates developed exercises for injured soldiers using bed springs, inspiring the Reformer machine.

After the war, he moved to New York, where dancers, including those from George Balanchine’s ballet company, embraced his method for injury prevention and strength training.

Over time, Pilates evolved from a niche rehabilitation practice into a global fitness trend known for improving posture, core strength, and overall body control.

Are there different forms of Pilates?

There are a few different variations of Pilates (such as studio Pilates, classical Pilates, and clinical Pilates), which vary depending on the class size and the order in which each exercise is carried out.

The two main forms of Pilates are mat (floor-based exercises carried out on a yoga mat) and reformer (machine-based).

What to expect with Pilates

If you’re considering a Pilates class, first, you should decide whether you want to do a mat class or an equipment one. If you’ll be streaming the class at home, that decision is made for you (mat it is!), but if you’re going to a studio, you’ll have the option of either.

Despite this being a personal choice, starting with mat work is recommended since it is the foundation for all Pilates.

For Pilates, wear form-fitting, stretchy clothing that allows for unrestricted movement while keeping your body alignment visible. Opt for leggings or fitted shorts and a breathable, snug top to prevent fabric from bunching during exercises. Comfort, flexibility, and support are key!

Pilates Equipment for Beginners

Many of my clients want to start with in-home Pilates workouts and end up loving the privacy and convenience of the practice.

With just a few pieces of compact and affordable equipment, you could start your Pilates journey today. Here's what you'll need:

  • Pilates ball: Adds instability to exercises, engaging core muscles for balance and deeper activation.

  • Resistance bands: Provide adjustable tension to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility with controlled resistance.

  • Sturdy blocks: Offer support and alignment assistance, helping with balance and proper form.

  • Pilates ring: Creates gentle resistance to target inner thighs, arms, and core for increased muscle engagement.

  • Light dumbbells: Enhance strength training in Pilates by adding small, controlled resistance without compromising form.

  • Pilates mat: Provides cushion that enhances comfort and support during workouts

  • Pilates ankle socks: Enhances trip and traction on the mat, reducing any slips, and ensuring stability during movements, while keeping the feet warm

  • Pilates crew socks

What Is the Difference Between Yoga and Pilates?

Yoga and Pilates both focus on mind-body connection. They both also help with flexibility, breath control, and mindfulness. However, they have distinct differences.

Yoga often incorporates meditation and static postures. Pilates, which was developed for rehabilitation, focuses on core strength, controlled movements, and muscle endurance. Yoga tends to be more fluid and spiritual, while Pilates is precision-based and rooted in biomechanics.

Both improve posture and flexibility, but Pilates prioritizes strength and controlled resistance training.
